Living it Up

August 14 2007

That is what we have been doing for the past two days. The Big T decided that we had been working quite hard all week and also on our weekends (did I ever complain about the fact that the weekends are only one day long here...!! I will save it for another time), and booked us into this beautiful hotel for two days. Its quite strange, when you have been living in Nepal for a few weeks your defenition of luxury shifts quite dramatically. To be honest for me if we have hot water, a fan and a mosquito net that is pretty much at the top end of the scale!!

So this hotel was just an amazing suprise.. it is on the border of the Shivapuri National Park and it is not a huge hotel it comprises of 6 small buildings that each house four rooms (like little cottages) and they are all spread out around the grounds so that you feel like you are the only people there http://www.ktmgh.com/parkvillage/photogallery.htm.

Yesterday we went for a hike around the National Park and it was really beautiful although we were warned about the leaches and spent the whole five hours constantly checking each other for the little critters. Amazingly we esaped without attack which is really suprising as everyone here who has been trekking in the monsoon came back with ridiculous leach scars.. war wounds so to speak. Turnip got upset because the maps are SO bad here that we couldn't find the route to the top (I was releived because it was a 30k trek all in all and there was also mention of tigers ?!!) but he had to agree the views of the whole Kathmandu valley were stunning. It was bug central though at some points in the trek the screech from the insects was so loud that we couldn't even shout over the top of it!! Pictures to follow...

Apart from that we have just been lounging around watching English movies, drinking wine and eating ourselves to death!! We are missing the kidddies a little bit but next week we are leaving them for good which is going to be so sad they don't know it yet and I cant seem to get the guts to tell them... oooh

Another thing I was going to tell you about was all the weird illnesses and conditions that everyone always seems to be suffering from. It is so weird but I thought you might all like to know. Basically at any one time any one person here will be suffering from something! I will just run through the list of things we have had to deal with over the past two days just to give you a flavour! So the main thing that people are ill from is some sort of stomach bug.. there are always at least two of the guys here ill with a stomach bug. We have so far escaped this one I am very glad to say as they can be brutal but I think it is more a question of when than if. Next is the "common cold", a cold here is not like a cold back at home and on Saturday night our house mate was rushed to hospital with a cold he had a dangerously high fever and he was vomitting he was OK luckily but he has been ill for around two weeks now all in all. As for me I was bitten by some weird insect and my little finger was swollen to three times it's usual size. It was getting so big that it actually woke me up during the night.. it seems to have gone down a little this morning! And finally Jon... the other morning Jon woke up with a cut on his face.. bit weird he could not remember doing it but the next day is scabbed over and in three days the scab had fallen off. The day after that he had little lesions all up his arm.. same thing they scabbed over and then the scabs fell off.. that was two days ago and there have only been a couple more since. He says that they don't itch or hurt so we are just waiting to see if there are any more coming which there don't seem to be but there you go just a little snapshot!!
